The Bible answers the question; what is sin? In 1st John 3:4, sin is defined as the violation of the Law. The term law here goes beyond the Ten Commands of Exodus, it is the failure of man to obey any of God's clear instructions. The Law of God was given for the protection and well being of the human race.

I would shudder to know of any loving parent who would not institute rules in his home for the smooth running of that home and the security of his children. Why should he not be expected to warn his kids from a young age that it is unsafe to push objects into electrical sockets, and the danger such actions would pose?

I do not believe that there's any parent on this earth who is more loving than our Heavenly Father. If then earthly fathers would be so concerned about the welfare of his children, what should be expected of our Father of lights from whom all good things come down to us, and with whom there's no shadow of turning? It is no wonder that the apostle James refer to the law as the law of liberty.

A sin is anything that offends God. "And what are the things that offend God?" you may ask. Well, to understand and actually know the things that offend God, you have to actually sit, take time and make the effort to read and study the bible.

(Rom 14:23) And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
Jesus died for our sin of the OT.
(Gal 3:19) Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

Good question, Kessina!

Romans 14:23: "Everything that does not come from faith is sin." For example, sin is unbelief. Sin and evil have an active and a passive component, often referred to as "sins of commission" and "sins of omission." Interestingly, the first two of the capital sins listed in Revelation 21:8, "cowardly" and "unbelieving," are sins of omission calling for execution in the Lake of Fire. Likewise, Jesus warns in Luke 9:61 of the person who begins the conversion process but then reconsiders: "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62).

1 John 5:17: All wrongdoing is sin.

James 4:17: "If anyone knows the good they ought to do, and does not do it, it is sin." Meaning, there can be sins of omission.

1 John 3:4: "Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness."

Sin is transgressing God’s law and includes such things as:

1. Lying. Lying is listed as a sin in the Ten Commandments--#9: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor" (Exodus 20:16).
2. Lust. Jesus made it very clear that it is not alright when a man longs to have an illicit sexual relationship with a woman (and, presumably, the reverse is also true).).
3. Cheating: "Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters." --1 Corinthians 6:9.
4. Deceit: 1 Peter 2:1: "Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind." But in 1 Peter 2:22, Peter speaks of Jesus' sinlessness--“He [Jesus] committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.”
5. Evil thoughts. Jesus's diagnosis of man's depraved heart: Matthew15:19: For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: 20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.
6. Immoral behavior. Amplified Bible says, "Run away from sexual immorality [in any form, whether thought or behavior, whether visual or written]. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the one who is sexually immoral sins against his own body, and more."

In a nutshell, it’s anything we say, think, do or don’t do that is displeasing to God.

"Now, just imagine if someone sinned only 3 times in a day – one bad thought, one unkind word, one loss of temper about something. You’d probably think that’s pretty good. But 3 sins a day adds up to more than a thousand sins in a year. Imagine standing before a traffic judge with 1,000 transgressions of the law. And yet, we try to stand before an all Holy God whose standard is perfection. But praise God for Jesus for paying the penalty for our sin." —John Sorensen
