Philippians 2:12 - 13
ESV - 12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 13 For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

God desires for us to have Heavenly desires and not desires of the flesh. This does not mean that we can't long for something here on Earth but it means not to build your treasures up on Earthly things where here on earth there is no treasure, but to build your treasures in heaven where there is Eternal Life. Matthew 6:19 [ Treasures in Heaven ] “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. I would think that one's desire can cause trouble if they treat them as idols or give them more attention than God. Such as, if someone spends all day watching TV, or surfing on the Net, and not spending anytime in God's Word. We must not put Earthly things, things we desire, before God....nothing, not even our children. I don't mean that you can't take care of your baby or children because you have to read the Bible. God understands in these type circumstances that you have to read His Word when it is convenient for you to do so. You have to be logical.
As we renew our minds through the Word of God our desires will begin to line up with His desires. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2 NKJV). As our thinking lines up with God's way of thinking our desires begin to line up with His will and desires. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. (Philippians 2:13 NLT). This is why Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to be our Helper and Guide in this regard.
