Was our Lord Jesus commanding obedience to the law as a way to eternal life? And why didn't He present Himself as the way at that time?

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "what is written in the law? How do you read?" And he answered, "you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself." And he said to him, "you have answered right; do this, and you will live."

Obviously Jesus is commanding obedience to the law. Why? Because obedience to the law requires faith. St Paul picks up right after him, "Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law." (Rom 3:31)

No Jesus knew he (the lawyer) wouldn't be able to fully obey the commandments...

Even if it were possible that anyone could obey ALL the commandments, they are still tainted with the blemish of the Adamic sin...

No one can be saved other than by the undeserved kindness of God, The Grace of God...

Even Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc, were saved by Grace...Rom 11:5,6
