First, a look at the legality. These states allow first cousin marriage: Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina*(1), Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. *(1) In North Carolina, while first cousin marriage is legal, double cousin marriage is not. Double cousin marriage is defined as a couple who have the same people on both sides--that is, they share both sets of grandparents. These six states allow first cousin marriage under certain circumstances. If you live in these six states, seek legal advice. Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Utah, Wisconsin. All other states, it is illegal to marry a first cousin. But keep in mind, that states ordinarily recognize marriages made in states where it is legal to marry a first cousin.*(2) Now, what does the Bible say? To understand God's will, one must read Leviticus 18:6-17. I won't delineate each example here, I have provided the verse to look up. But note, the Bible--God's word and will--does not prohibit marriage between first cousins. It is dicey to try and add personal opinion to statements of scripture. With this knowledge as a background, it is advised that if you have any questions regarding illegality, consult an attorney in the state in which you were married if you have doubts, as well as the state in which you live--to make sure that state recognizes your marriage from a different state. Also, it would be advised to consult a physician with the proper specialty and understanding of genetics (not necessarily fertility specialists) for consultation about whether or not you should have children together.
