No, you don't need to kneel when you pray. You can pray anytime, anywhere. You just talk to God. You don't need specific ways, phrases, words, positions...just talk to Him as if you were talking to your earthly father. He IS your Heavenly Father, and would like you to talk to Him just as much.
When Jesus taught us how to pray, He never mentioned about positions. You can pray in whatever way makes it easiest for you to focus your attention and self to God, whether that be sitted, standing, kneeling or lying down. As long as you are approaching God with an open heart, then that is all that matters. He wants to have a relationship with you; He is not concerned about formalities about how you are positioned when praying.

When speaking to the president of one's country, a certain posture is needed. Stand straight, express your greetings, speak clearly, listen attentively and appreciate the time he spent talking with you. It is improper to slouch, murmur or speak while half-awake. When speaking to one's parents, the same etiquette is given. Anything less is unappreciative, or worse, rude. Now how much more if one is speaking to the Master and Maker of the Universe, Giver of Life? Does one have to kneel? I believe the proper posture is not to kneel, but to prostrate oneself.

Matthew 17:14, Matthew 20:20, Mark 1:40, Acts 7:60, Acts 9:40, These are just a few references to kneeling in the New Testament. Kneeling shows the ult-most reverence and submission, I "and I say I" think that we should always be in Prayer in all matters, in all positions, when it comes to worship and prayer or prayer with supplication we should show the reverence deserved. Again that's my view and opinion. To God be all Glory...

If kneeling to pray is mandatory, it's a new rule; sorta like what happens in the NFL every season. One year it's okay to do a surprise onside kick; the next, you have to declare it, thereby ruining the surprise! So, it would be, if you're getting ready to pray, you have to let everybody know?
That's probably not the theory; the idea of assuming a posture of submission might be to let God know that number one, you're serious, and also that you're focused. None of this 'Riding down the highway praying' stuff! Even if you are being ROAD RAGED! '\("_")/'
What did Jesus say about prayer? He said, "When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" (Matthew 6:6).
He didn't say, 'When you pray, you MUST do it in private.' He did say this: when you pray, don't be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. (Matt 6:5)
Jesus' instructions on prayer causes me to think that kneeling to pray can at times be inadvisable. It could make your prayer seem staged for the purpose of being witnessed by an audience. IOW, if you're in a courtroom about to hear the jury's decision of your case, it's probably best to keep your seat and ask God to give you favor, instead of getting out in the aisle on your knees. (I'm one who thinks it's better to pray at home in that private place before going into the courtroom; that's just me).
Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane right before He was put on trial and sentenced to die, and then nailed to a cross. Matthew 26:39 states, "He bowed with His face to the ground and prayed."
He prayed again while He was on the Cross. It's recorded in Matthew 27:46 that He cried out with a loud voice saying, "My God.. why have You forsaken Me?"
Luke didn't write about the 'forsaken by God' prayer. He recorded Jesus praying to His Father to "forgive them, for they don't know what they do" (Luke 23:34). And also Jesus' final invocation, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit" (vs 46).
Make no mistake, these are prayers and they were uttered by the Son of God while He was naked and nailed to a tree! (The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree - Acts 5:30 NKJV).
If the rules for where, when and how to pray are different now, they haven't been published.
