Biblically speaking, a Christian community consists of believers who share a common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and whose religious practices are consistent with the teachings of Scripture. They do not have to belong to one single denomination but they recognize the authority of Scripture and the finished works of the cross as the basis for their communion. This community recognizes their shared view of life in Christ and seek to walk in obedience to the Lord by His word. They look forward to the soon coming of the Lord Jesus in person to redeem His church and to judge the world. A Christian community is a term that has been generically used to describe all Christians in general but this description may be ambiguous for a number of reasons. First, there are people who hold themselves out as Christians but whose doctrines and practices violate or contradict the teachings of the Bible. Secondly, some people deny the humanity and divinity of Jesus Chris or his bodily resurrection and second coming as Eternal King. For example, several cults such as Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons do not fit into the biblical definition of a Christian community because of their false doctrines. A local church setting consisting of a Bible believing community provides a clearer picture of a distinct Christian community. A Statement of faith and a set of regulations governed by Scripture would bind the members to each other in communion. In this context those who believe in Christ and have been affirmed by the church are considered bona fide members of that church community.
