God has given us a new heart and a new Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus into us. So our heart should be "perfect". God commanded us to renew our mind (Romans 12:2), not to change our hearts, because we cannot do ourselves, God can by His Grace. But verses in NT like these: Matthew 15:19 or in OT Jeremiah 17:9 indicated otherwise. Moreover, many ministers still exhorted us to check our hearts. I am confused in the difference between heart and mind - which were in our hands. Thank you very much.

The bible tells us the heart is evil above all things mark7:21. By renewing our minds Ephesians 4:23 our darkened hearts (from years of livening contrary to Gods word) will be washed by the word of God! We are constantly exhorted by the pulpit because we lived for many many years loving sin and all of its pleasures. Someone explained the renewing of our minds like this..... "When we come to Christ, we are covered in mud (sin) as we go about reading fellowship, repenting and daily praise to the one who made us.. We are being washed like a gentle spray of water, not being clean all at one time! But for the rest of our lives being washed from the past as we go along in our walk we see definite change, BUT! There are still things God needs to change. Paul kind of summed it up in 1 Cor 9:24-27.
