The main Bible verses about lending money, as I see it, come from both the Old Testament and the New Testament:

Psalm 37:21
Psalm 112:5
Proverbs 22:7
Matthew 5:42

Debt may be unavoidable at times, but since "the borrower is servant to the lender" (Prov. 22:7), it is wise to avoid it whenever possible. Great freedom is enjoyed by those who "owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law" (Rom. 13:8).
Luke 6:35

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done (Proverbs 19:17).

God would rather that we give generously to those who are unable to pay us back.

When we lend to other people we expect our money back, with some interest as a return on our investment. That will be our only reward.

When we give generously to other people, who can’t pay us back, God says we are actually lending to him. Why is that? Because taking care of the poor and meeting their needs is a high priority to God, and it is God’s will that we (Christians) would be his instruments to take care of the poor.

This kindness in caring for the poor leads to eternal rewards that could be a hundredfold or more.

Lending is not a sin, but God will not reward it. The first believers did not lend to the church to care for the poor, they sold their assets and gave generously. God will richly reward them for eternity in the new heaven and earth.
