I think Luke answers this question quite clearly: Luk 1:26-35 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?" And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. Simply put, it was a miracle, and miracles are not particularly difficult for the omnipotent Creator of the universe and all that is in it.
Do you think that it is through human effort a baby is conceived? God breathes life into the cells causing conception. He uses the man and woman as His vehicle. How much harder do you think it would have been for God to cause conception to take place without a male involved? God could have used any means He chose, but He used Mary to be the recipient of His Son. This is no more complex to God than when any other Mommy conceives on any give day...it's just that the baby was far more special.
Actually the answer is right there in verse 18. She was pregnant by the holy spirit. Are you asking others because you don't believe what the bible is saying? Read all the gospels.
What Gabriel said about the Spirit was how Mary conceived. Aside from that, Mary's "motherhood" was similar to "surrogacy". Meaning that, nothing in the "human composition" of Jesus, did an "egg" from Mary or "sperm" from Joseph or anyone, contribute to his being. Remember, he was not of this earth; he was "from above" (Jn. 8:23). He was the incarnate YHVH ELOHIM Creator of Gen. 1 & 2, the Logos in John 1.
