Although the Old Testament does not specifically identify the serpent that tempted Eve as Satan or the devil, the New Testament (Revelation 12:9) calls Satan "that ancient serpent", which would seem to support the common belief of Satan using the serpent as his agent in tempting Eve and leading her and Adam to fall into sin as described in Genesis 3:1-6, especially since the serpent lied to Eve, and Jesus described Satan as "the father of lies" (John 8:44). Also, in Job 1:6 and Job 2:1, a being identified as "the accuser" or "the adversary" (which are meanings of the name "Satan") appeared before God for the purpose of questioning Job's character; claiming that Job worshipped God only because God had prospered him or preserved him from harm; and contending that Job would curse God if Job were to be afflicted with loss of his family and possessions, or of his physical health.
