It is my opinion that Satan was not the serpent but rather inhabited the serpent. He chose the serpent because it "was more subtle than any beast of the field..." (Genesis 3:1). Satan is a spiritual being. Satan can disguise himself as we read in II Corinthians 11:12: "Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light..." This is all more the reason that a child of God needs to equip themselves for battle by being steadfast in prayer and in the Word allowing the Holy Spirit to give you discernment and victory.
