Because God did not reveal His Name until Moses asked Him to in Exodus 3:14. I AM THAT I AM - I am all that you need.

The Genesis reference is in the story of Abraham giving his son Isaac as an offering. (A picture of Christ) God intervened and provided a ram for sacrifice. Thus Abraham named the place God provides. Some say El Shaddai - The Almighty. 


These are characteristics or descriptions of God's personality. Not His Name.

There is no doubt that El Shaddai was the name God introduced himself to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as in Ex 6:3

But, I see the confusion In Gen 22:14 because Moses wrote:

"And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day." suggesting that Abraham knew the name YHVH and therefore Ex. 6:3 becomes questionable.

Strong's Concordance says that Jehovah-Jireh, is a symbolical name for Mount Moriah

Notice 2 things:
1. Moses identified this place as Mt Moriah in an earlier verse:"Genesis 22:2: "And He said: 'Take now thy son, thine only son, whom thou lovest, even Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.'"

2. The name " Jehovahjireh" was the name as it is said or known "to this day" (Gen 22:14 according to Moses).

So, Moses was addressing his readers and identifying that place for them to understand that the place was Mt Moriah and Jehovahjireh " as it is said/known to this day". Notice again: " as it is known" during Moses' time, and even now.

Contextually, Gen.22:14 should therefore NOT be taken as though Abraham knew the name YHVH since this assumption will be contrary to Ex. 6:3.
