What "days" that will be shortened is the Lord referring to in Matt 24:22?

In this passage the Lord said that "Those days will be shortened for the sake of the elect," but what are the days was He talking about?

Matthew 24:22

NKJV - 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened.

In verse 15 of Matthew 24 The Lord refers to Daniel's prophecy as stated in Daniel 12:11 "And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days."

By my understanding, "those days" will be the last half (approximately 3-1/2 years) of tribulation or the great tribulation. At the onset of these days, the antichrist will set himself up in the newly constructed temple in Jerusalem (future) and demand that he be worshiped as God.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God."
(See Revelation 13)

This period is also referred to as the time of Jacob's trouble (Jeremiah 30)

This will be literal "Hell on Earth". By comparison, the antichrist, the beast will make Adolf Hitler look like a choir boy.

He was speaking of the Tribulation period when the persecution of those coming to Christ after the Rapture of the church will be so intense, no one would survive if Christ Himself didn't put a limit on how long it would go on.

Remember, a person during those days takes either the mark of the Beast or receives the sealing of the Holy Spirit. Without the mark of the Beast, no one can do business, buy or sell or basically do anything that they will need to sustain life, not to mention the constant executions of those who fail to worship the Beast.

It will be, indeed, a brutal time for Christians.

See Rev 13 5-17
