What "days" that will be shortened is the Lord referring to in Matt 24:22?

In this passage the Lord said that "Those days will be shortened for the sake of the elect," but what are the days was He talking about?

Matthew 24:22

NKJV - 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake those days will be shortened.

More important is the context. This appears in the Book of Mathew. It would cause you to stop and be concerned for OUR day as it is developing. Chapter 23 and 24 are words of Jesus concerning what he understood about what God was doing, but time is not noted, just circumstances and action.

The most interesting one is Chapter 23 and the last two verses stating that Jesus WILL NOT return till Jerusalem calls and believes he is Messiah. Are we headed there now? There is no time frame, just what is coming. How long? Who knows except God. Not even Jesus was given the facts in the flesh.
