2Timothy 4:7, the Apostle Paul, in one of his epistles to Timothy, he wrote that he had fought a good fight and had kept the faith. He was in his last days and he pretty knew that he was nearing his physical bodily death. What did he mean by saying so? When you officially declare to be Christian, (I say “officially” because of Romans 10:10), you have declared a spiritual war on demonic powers which have had access to you by either your own doing or by factors that may not have been of your own making. The devil is directly confrontational to the will of God and by one choosing to commit to the will of God is a direct declaration of war on the forces of evil. The war fare is spiritual (Ephesians 6:12) but which the intention is to directly inflict pain on our flesh with the aim of forcing us to deny and denounce our allegiance to the almighty God and His will through His Son Jesus the CHRIST. In this fact and understanding, when we accept CHRIST as our LORD and Savior, the next step is to seek to acquire a Godly character that aids us through the earthly journeys by which we are led in the correct path of salvation, and by sticking to it, we are assured of the divine promises of God to us. On the other hand though, the devil having known the prize that awaits those who successfully overcome all his wiles and machinations, he tries all he can and unleashes all the weaponry that is available in his armory to ensure that even though we have taken a step to accept and allow Jesus into our lives, we will somehow fall in one of his many trap he lays ahead of us. The direct interpretation of this is that our faith in God and His Son Jesus is only believed to be equally said as done when we overcome all such temptations and therefore are finally accepted of God. In Matthew 4:1-10, the devil tested Jesus’ faith in God. Jesus overcame not by avoiding the devil, but by confronting him with confidence in righteousness. It was to be done. In such, our faith in God begins to be not only faith, but it stands approved of the Father, the host of heaven and of men. The devil has a belief that we only love God when He (God) shields us from anything which may inflict pain on our bodies. After he had sought for permission from God to destroy Job’s property (Job 1:8-22), he realized it hadn’t changed Job’s Faith in God; he then sought for permission to directly inflict pain on Job’s body (Job 2:1-6), looking for at least one way whichever it may be to make Job lose his faith in God. When Job overcame, he is even testified of by God Himself in Ezekiel 14:14. The devil will use anything to test our faith in God as; uncontrolled appetite for sex, riches hunger, power, diseases, spiritual attacks etc. Such attacks are not directed at us per se, they are directed at our Faith in God through His Son Jesus. The devil’s ultimate goal is that if we have failed, we will surely dwell with him in hell. For he is already condemned and his only reward is hell. So if he tests our faith in God and we do not give in, we are assured of heaven and the promises of God to us through Jesus. For when we accept and allow Jesus into our lives, it is good news to God and to the heavens. By that, salvation has come to us. However, the maintenance (to keep it just the way we have received it) of the gift of salvation is done by us, and this is what I can term as character. Character is not given, character is formed. Many people love to go to heaven when they do not love the one to take them there! Many people love salvation but do not love the Savior! The Apostle Paul meant that he had managed to keep his faith in God despite all the attacks he had faced all of which were life threatening. Paul finally died a very painful death, rather than give up his faith in God. Our faith in God is therefore to be tested, and when we overcome the threats of the devil, then we have kept it just as Paul did. This makes God proud of us.
