When the psalmist speaks of the courts (that is, the courtyards) of God, he is employing an imagery both of majesty and beauty -- majesty in the sense of the place where God lives and reigns as King (just as we speak of the court of an earthly monarch, where the monarch dwells and rules, with servants to carry out his smallest command), and beauty in terms of the magnificence of both the dwelling place itself (as befits a ruler), and of the dwelling's surroundings, which (on earth) are normally large and meticulously tended estates, containing expansive lawns, colorful gardens and other eye-pleasing features.

Although the psalmist is employing earthly imagery, the Bible makes clear that the beauty of Heaven surpasses any comparison that could possibly be described or imagined. (In 2 Corinthians 12:4, Paul (who was granted a foretaste of Heaven by God) could only characterize the revelations he heard as "inexpressible".) And, for the Christian, the greatest joy will be the ability to remain in God's presence, experiencing perfect, unbroken fellowship with Him, for eternity. (As the apostle John noted in 1 John 3:2, "When He [Christ] appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall Him as He is.")

What is meant by "the courts of our God"?

The composers of Psalm 84 were the sons of Korah, Levites who served at Jehovah's temple and highly esteemed their service privileges.

Psalm 84: 1- 2 ESV: "How amiable are thy tabernacles, O Jehovah of hosts! 2 My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of Jehovah; My heart and my flesh cry out unto the living God."

Meaning of "the courts of our God"

In Scripture, "the courts of our God" refers to the sacred spaces surrounding God's dwelling place, especially the areas of the tabernacle or temple where worshippers gathered. These courts were the places where God's people came near to Him through prayer, praise, sacrifice, and fellowship.

The phrase expresses the following:

Nearness to God

Being in God's courts symbolises drawing close to His presence. It reflects the privilege of approaching the Holy One in the place He chose for His name to dwell.

Worship and devotion

The courts were where God's people offered thanksgiving, heard His Word, and participated in worship. To be in His courts meant actively engaging in honouring Him.

Belonging to God's household

Standing in God's courts signifies belonging to His covenant community. It pictures inclusion, acceptance, and relationship with the Lord.

Joy in God's presence

Many psalms describe the courts as places of delight, expressing the longing to be where God is and to experience His goodness.

Basically, "the courts of our God" represent the place where God welcomes His people into His presence, where they offer worship, and where they enjoy fellowship with Him.
