I think the answer to this question could hinge on proximity. Proverbs 27:10 says (in giving advice), "Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family, and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster strikes you— better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away." A "close neighbor" can truly be a friend, especially in times of adversity. Now that is comforting!
