The Bible warns us against talking too much or being overly talkative. In fact, the Bible says that a fool can be recognized by his many words (Ecclesiastes 5:3). Ecclesiastes 10:14 adds that a foo...

We hurt others by talking too much. “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise” (Prov. 10:19 nkjv).

Proverbs 10:19: “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.”

Proverbs 15:1-2 says, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly."

“The mouth of fools pours forth foolishness” (Pr 15:2). “People who discipline their tongue can control their whole body” (James 3:1-2).

James 3:2-11:
2 "For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

“How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?"

Proverbs 11:13 - “Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered.”

Proverbs 17:27:
“He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.”

And now my favorite:

Proverbs 17:28: "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.”

Those wise words that come from the Book of Proverbs, chapter 17:27-28, are dear to me. Another wise person once said, “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” --Be careful with that tongue. —Shelbyville Times-Gazette

Psalm 52:1-2: Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? The goodness of God endureth continually. Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

The Psalm of David reveals unto us, for one’s tongue who deviseth mischief, it is they who love evil, more than good, and lying, rather than speaking righteously. For they have not made God their strength but trusted in the abundance of their riches, stored in their heart and minds, which has strengthened themselves in their wickedness. (Psa 52:2-3,7) There was brought unto our Lord Jesus, one who was possessed by a devil, who was blind and dumb, and Lord Jesus healed him, who then spoke and saw. (Mat 12:22) When the Pharisees heard it, they boasted with their tongue that deviseth mischief, working deceitfully, and said, “This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beel’-ze-bub the prince of the devil.” (Mat 12:24) Lord Jesus, knew their thoughts, and said unto them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand. And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself, how shall then his kingdom stand? If I by Be-el’-ze-bub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come unto you." (Mat 12:25-28)

Lord Jesus, as He cast out the devils by the Spirit of God, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. Therefore, the generation of vipers today, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the riches in the heart, the mouth speaketh. (Mat 12:28,31,34) The tongue that deviseth mischief which proceedeth out of the mouth cometh forth from the heart, and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, and blasphemies that defile a man. (Mat 15:11,18-20) Today one needs to keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life. (Pro 4:23) The issues of life are those who boast themselves with their tongues, the six things the Lord hates, yea, seven are an abomination to Him. A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (Pro 6:15-19)

Today, one needs to be aware that the goodness of God endures continually, as Jonah went through. The word of the Lord came to him, “Arise, go to Nin’-e-veh, and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.” Jonah then rose up and went down to Jop’-pa and went by ship to go to Tar’-shish to flee from the presence of the Lord. (Jon 1:1-3) The Lord then brought a storm in the sea, and the mariners who were in the ship cried unto their god. The shipmaster came and found Jonah asleep and said unto him, “O sleeper? Arise, call upon thy God.” (Jon 1:4-6) They then cast a lot to know whose cause this evil that had come upon them was, and the lot fell on Jonah. They then cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from raging. The Lord then prepared a great fish that swallowed Jonah and was in its belly for three days and three nights. (Jon 1:7,15,17) Jonah then prayed unto the Lord his God, out of the fish's belly and said, "You have brought up my life from corruption, for they that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. I will sacrifice unto thee with thanksgiving; I will pay that I have vowed, salvation is of the Lord.” The Lord then spoke unto the fish, and it vomited Jonah upon a dry land. (Jon 2:1,4,6,8-10)

Matthew 16:4: A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jo’-nas.
