"Gates" is a picture of the leadership God has placed in his spiritual building the Church.

Metaphor and allegorical pictures and symbolism mark all prophetic books in the Bible. They should be interpreted and explained in their historic context and how they should be applied in our time.

The New Jerusalem is a picture of the Church that is being built here on earth on the apostles' doctrine and led by elders (Rev.20:1). This is not a literal building made up of mortar and stone.
