As Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, Christians are to pray and give thanks for those in positions of power, for the purpose of allowing Christians to live quiet and peaceable lives. However, when those earthly authorities use their power to take actions that are directly contrary to God's commandments, or require Christians to violate God's commandments, then (as the apostles told the Sanhedrin when ordered to stop teaching in Jesus' name), "We must obey God rather than human beings." (Acts 5:29). Considering the many Christians who have been persecuted or martyred for their faith by regimes that were actively anti-Christian, those of us who are fortunate enough to have the freedom to protest political actions should be motivated to peacefully raise our voices and make them heard when governmental policies or decisions threaten freedom (especially religious freedom), or violate Christian principles.
The bible states governments are in place as per God's will and authority. We must respect and honor that as Christians. But our government is unique in that it is a government of the people. We, as the governed, have a right to have a say in our own government. There is nothing wrong, in our system, to let your voice be heard. But it must be done respectfully, without malice or hate as God can always see what's in your heart.
