You can go before the Lord and talk to God anytime you please . Do you know Christ? If you know Jesus read the rest. If you don't talking to God is easy but hearing from God will be harder . If you are wanting answers to life's questions make sure what you are hearing lines up with the what is written in the bible . If your thoughts turn to doing something against God's word you are not hearing from Him but yourself or the evemy . Many things you don't have to pray about. The Ten Commandments are there for a reason. There are also many more commandments in the bible . If you are asking God to help you decide a change of job or a move to another city, seek Him first. Ask for wisdom. Ask God what He wants for you in the situation you are talking about . Pray and wait upon the Lord. Waiting can be very hard . If you don't get peace about your decision don't move forward . If you are confused pray again . If your situation requires an immediate answer go in the direction you think best and ask God to "shut down " your decision if it's wrong . Tell Him you do not want to be out of His will and only want what He wants. But again, if you have no peace I strongly urge you to wait even if you think you are losing out on something .
I think the more pertinent question, especially for those who claim to hear voices is, "How do you know the voice you hear is from God or from the devil?" Mohamad heard voices and even was not sure if it was from God or from the devil. Finally he succumb to persuasion and presume it was from God. And I think we know the rest.
