What is the significance that Jesus was born of a virgin?

Is there relevance to the breaking of the hymen through blood and water when Mary gave birth?

In my opinion, in addition to being a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy (Isaiah 7:14, as cited in Matthew 1:22-23)(although footnotes to the verse in Isaiah indicate that "virgin" as used in the verse could also be translated as "young woman"), in order for Jesus to have a holy, divine nature (as well as an uncorrupted human nature) from the moment of conception, that conception would have to have occurred through the overshadowing of Mary by God the Holy Spirit (as indicated by Gabriel in Luke 1:35), rather than by normal human sexual relations, or by any other means.

I view the linking of blood and water as not relating to Jesus' birth, but as pertaining to or symbolic of their cleansing effect with regard to sin. (As Augustus Toplady said in the words of the hymn Rock of Ages (in reference to John 19:34), "Let the water and the blood From Thy riven side which flowed Be of sin the double cure Cleanse me from its guilt and power.")
