In the parable of the wise and foolish builders Jesus told us to build our "spiritual house" upon the Rock. That rock is Jesus himself, the chief cornerstone supporting the foundation of our lives. So everything else we use as building blocks must come from him. I would like to propose 4 essential building blocks for a mature and powerful spiritual life.

Grace Faith Love Hope

The "Grace" of God provides us with everything we need for an abundantly fulfilling and deeply satisfying life. It all starts with receiving that grace by accepting Jesus as our personal saviour. But the grace of God comes to us in many forms. We need the spiritual eyes to see that grace and accept it for our blessing and benefit. The spiritual gifts are good examples of the different forms of God's grace.

Without "Faith" it is impossible to please God and faith without actions is no faith at all. Just because we believe what the bible says is true does not mean we have faith. Only when we take what the bible says and apply it into our daily lives are we trusting that God knows best. When we ask God in prayer to reveal his will for us - before making decisions - then obey what God tells us to do, that is exercising faith. When God wants to lead us down an unfamiliar road, to a destination we cannot see, with lots of obstacles along the way, it takes real faith to follow his lead. 

We "Love" God by doing the things that please him. I have discovered 5 ways to love God. First, I immerse myself in his word from the bible - read, study, meditate, and memorize it. Second, I talk to God about everything, in an attitude of prayer, all day long; then listen carefully for his will to be revealed. Third, I fill my life with praise and thanksgiving, often through contemporary Christian worship music. Fourth, I have intimate fellowship with other Christians on a regular basis through church, small group and mentoring environments. Fifth, I serve where God has called me, using the spiritual gifts he has given me to bless others.

We "Love' other people by following Jesus example. He reached out to everyone with the love of God by bringing truth, acceptance, compassion and healing. We need the spiritual eyes to see the needs around us, then act to bring God's blessings to the people that need them. As we do this, we will often ask God for more grace to meet these needs, as our own resources will be so inadequate.

Our "Hope" is built on God's promises to us. In this world, Jesus said, we would have trouble - suffering, persecution, corruption, injustice, poverty, sickness, pollution of sin, etc. But he also said to take heart because he had overcome this world. Jesus defeated the power of sin, death and the devil and restored eternal life to us. Jesus gave us his Holy Spirit to live within us to be our teacher and source of power. Jesus is coming again to reward our faithfulness. God the Father will judge everyone who has rejected Jesus, punishing all evil and wickedness for eternity. Together Father, Son and Holy Spirit will create a new heaven and new earth. We will live with God in this perfect world forever. This human life is just a scratch on the line of eternity with God. We are aliens and strangers in this place - heaven is our home.

All 4 building blocks - Grace, Faith, Love and Hope - are needed to build a powerful and mature spiritual life that enables us to walk with Jesus every moment of every day.

What should be our foundation for our walk with Jesus?

When I think about what really holds a walk with Jesus together, it keeps coming back to the same simple, steady truth: the foundation has to be Jesus Himself. Not the things we do for Him, not the routines we build around Him, but Him — His words, His character, His presence. Matthew 7:24–25 paints that picture of the house on the rock, and Jesus makes it clear that the rock is not just belief; it is hearing His words and actually living by them. That is where the walk starts, and that is where it stays steady.

There is also this sense that our foundation has to be grace. Not our performance, not our spiritual strength. Ephesians 2:8–9 reminds us that we’re saved by grace through faith, and that same grace becomes the ground we stand on every day. A walk with Jesus built on self‑effort cracks fast. A walk built on grace holds, even when we stumble.

Scripture keeps pointing us back to love as part of that foundation too. Jesus says in John 15:9, “Remain in my love.” It is not a suggestion; it is an anchor. Remaining in His love means remembering that He loved us first, that His love does not shift with our moods or failures. When His love becomes the foundation, obedience stops feeling like pressure and starts feeling like response.

Faith is part of it as well — not blind faith, but trust shaped by who Jesus is. Hebrews 12:2 calls Him the author and finisher of our faith. That means our walk is not something we invent; it is something He leads. Faith becomes the way we keep moving when we do not see clearly, the way we hold onto Him when life feels uncertain.

There is also the Word of God. Not as a checklist, but as nourishment. Psalm 119:105 says His word is a lamp to our feet. A lamp does not light the whole path; it lights the next step. A walk with Jesus grounded in Scripture becomes a walk where we are guided, corrected, encouraged, and reminded of what is true when everything else feels loud.

Community matters too, though it is easy to overlook. Hebrews 10:24–25 talks about encouraging one another, not walking alone. A foundation that includes other believers helps us stay steady when our own strength feels thin. Jesus never designed the walk to be solitary.

And prayer — not polished prayer, not perfect prayer, just an honest prayer. Philippians 4:6–7 says to bring everything to God, and that kind of openness becomes part of the foundation. Prayer keeps the relationship alive. It keeps us aware of His presence. It keeps us from drifting into self‑reliance.

Maybe the foundation is all of these woven together: Jesus Himself, His grace, His love, His Word, faith in who He is, prayer that keeps us close, and community that keeps us steady. 

But at the centre — always at the centre — is Jesus. A walk with Him stands firm when He is the ground beneath it. Everything else grows from there.

Your question: What should be our foundation for our walk with Jesus?

Jesus reveals the foundation through what Peter said to him when Jesus asked the apostles, "Whom do you say I am?"

Peter’s reply was, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Matthew 16:15: “He saith unto them, 'But whom say ye that I am?' And Simon Peter answered and said, 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.' And Jesus answered and said unto him, 'Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee,
but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.'”

What Peter said was not revealed to him on his own accord but revealed to him by the Father. This is where the foundation begins. Our confession of who Christ is that can only be revealed to us from the Father.

As to your question concerning the foundation for our walk with Jesus, I’m assuming you’re asking about our daily walk in Christ. The apostle wrote that we should walk in the Spirit that God has put within us and not after the flesh. 

God puts the fruits of his Holy Spirit within us that we may walk with Christ with his love, His faith, His patience, His long-suffering. These things are our foundation for how we walk in Christ.
