Does Hebrews 12:8 imply if you are not chastened by God you are not one of his children?

The word "bastard" here means as without a father - does that mean that if we are not chastened by God we aren't actually His child?

Hebrews 12:8

ESV - ⁸ If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
