Jericho was the first city that was conquered, and was symbolic of the "first fruits," which was to be completely devoted to God. God would allow them to keep the plunder from subsequent cities, but this was a test of obedience, and an opportunity to acknowledge that all good gifts came from God. I am amazed that out of hundreds of thousands of troops, only ONE disobeyed the ban. God had to make an example of Achan, to nip this sort of rebellion in the bud. If nothing had happened to Achan, God's future commands would be ignored.
I often wonder why Satan and his fallen angels are never mentioned when actions or behaviors such as Achan's are committed. Satan and his angels tried to take over heaven and were soundly defeated, but not totally as they were given a second opportunity to fight God and his creation of mankind on earth. I'm so glad that Genesis doesn't leave him out. Ezekiel and Isaiah give us an excellent perspective of his makeup and goals. Therefore, The Lord of Heaven's Armies (that is his name) and the God of Israel affords us the time to study the scriptures and learn about the war in heaven in Revelation, which was not written until much later. In the book of Job, again, Satan is mentioned and his dislike to God's ways are clearly stated. And his hate is directed at Job, who follows God's way closely. In conclusion, today Satan and his fallen angels are hard at work to destroy one's belief in Christ Jesus, grace, salvation, and eternal life. He is like a hungry and angry lion waiting to see who he can destroy by leading a person like he led Achan and many others today. So, stick close to, "The Way." The Way was what Jews called Jesus' movement when Jesus and his followers were on earthly Israel. And, by the way, The Way was considered an early branch of the Jewish religion.
