1 John 5:7-8, is an extension of John's declaring and explaining about Jesus Christ being God's Son and the Messiah that he wrote about in his gospel account, the book of John. Let us go back to John 3:3-6, and see what Jesus said about being born again. Jesus tells Nicodemus he must be born again, and immediately Nicodemus only sees in the physical realm. He says, can a person go back into the womb, to be born again. Jesus then explains He is speaking of the spirit. How does Jesus explain this? He says physical birth is water birth or of flesh, but new birth is of the Spirit. Now go to John 3:14-16, Jesus says He will be lifted up, talking about His crucifixion where He shed His blood. In John 1:13, John uses word blood to illustrate physical birth or fleshly birth. He also talks about John the Immerser baptizing with water but saying Jesus would baptize with the Spirit or the Holy Spirit, John 1:31-34. Taking all this together 1 John 5:7-8, John is saying the Holy Spirit, the water both physical birth and baptism and the blood both physical birth and the blood of Jesus, spiritually, all testify that Jesus is the Son of God, 1 John 5:5-6.
I think the understanding of 1 John 5:7-8 is cleared up by its context with the previous verse: 6And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross5:6 Greek This is he who came by water and blood.—not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with his testimony. 7So we have these three witnesses8the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree.
When we die physically, the blood and water separate showing that when the soldier pierced Jesus side that He was in fact physically dead. So no one could claim that he did not die.
