Remember that Jacob began his adult life with a major deception that affected his whole family. In spite of that, you can see that God blessed him greatly. You can also see that he has matured quite a bit, {note how he wrapped up his relationship with Laban}. Yet as he prepared to return home, you see evidence not of faith, but of fear for his life.
It's my opinion that the angel didn't "pick the fight", and probably tried to reason with him, which escalated into an all night battle.
