How seriously should I consider the words of a complete stranger who told me, "God told me to tell you, God has a plan."?

I know God does have a plan for all of us. I was moved that a complete stranger would walk up to me and tell me he was compelled to give me a message. He said that God told him to tell me, "God has a plan". Is this something good? I would think so, but then I start worrying that something bad is going to happen and He is trying to tell me to stop worrying!! I feel silly typing this because I SHOULD just be trusting Him no matter what. Thank you for your feedback.

I don't believe you are being silly in the least. If all the guy said is that "God has a plan", this is very true and certainly not a great revelation. God is in the process of fulfilling His plan every second, minute and hour of the day.

The "God told me to tell you" part implies that this gentleman professes prophetic (or psycic) abilities. So which is it? Who knows?

I have encountered individuals which I felt had a magnetism, I was drawn to them. After a brief discussion we both realized the common denominator was the Lord Jesus!
"The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:" (Romans 8:16).

On the otherhand I have felt repulsed by certain individuals who by demeanor, word or action seemed evil. (I'm usually a pretty good judge of character but my feelings at a particular time is no guarantee I had the right pereception).

It sounds pretty innocent, especially so considering his statement was so broad and non-specific but... you are wise to rely totally on what "God said" in His Word.

Consider 1 John 4:1-3:
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."

My "acid test" response question would go something like this: "Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the God who made you"? Although the response may not be immediate I don't believe The Lord's creatorship would be denied by a truly blood washed, born again, born from above, child of God.

I think that this is a serious and important question. There are some Christians who talk in this way and claim that God has given them a direct word concerning specific people.

The Bible gives us clear directions about what to do in such circumstances. We are not to accept what they say on trust. We don't just believe whatever people tell us because they say that God has told them. That is not what you do as a Christian.

According to the Bible you should "test the spirits". 1 John 4:1 This does not show any lack of faith. On the contrary it shows a mature Christian spirit which tests all things and holds on to only that which is good. 1 Thes 5:21

We need to recognise that even Christians can be wrong. And just because they say 'God told me this', does not mean they are right.

Regards
Phil

I would just assume that this was his method of trying to evangelize people in general. While he might be showing commendable missionary zeal, I would think (without knowing whatever else he might have said to you to substantiate his claimed message from God) that he did not in fact have a message from God that applied only to you personally, but that he was trying to initiate a general discussion about salvation, and that he would employ this same technique with anyone else whom he approached in an attempt to pique their interest.

If he had done this to me (again, in the absence of any substantiating detail that he might have offered), I would have thanked him, told him that I am saved, moved on, and put him out of my mind.

In Jeremiah the 29th chapter, God through the prophet Jeremiah delivers a word of hope to the remaining elders among he exiles. God declares in the 11th verse, "I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm, to give you a hope and a future."

Even though we are his people and definitely trust God, there is times when all of us may go through times of turmoil. God at times sends someone to remind us of his word. Sometimes we are focusing on our situation or God knows that something is coming, and we are encouraged to trust God.

Yes, I believe that God does send people to us. My son was in a restaurant and an 80-year-old man walked up to him and told him that he never believed in giving people a word and had never done it, but God told him to tell my son something that God would bring to pass if he was faithful. It has been 5 years and everything that man spoke to my son has come to pass. At 80 God used a man that never believed that God used people to give a word to give a word to my son.

God is not to be limited. He is God and will use an 80-year-old or a 5-year-old child. Years ago my 5 year old child spoke a word into one of my friend's life and my friend looked up and called my daughter's name, and then my daughter went on to talk about her toys. My friend said she was going through something nobody knew. She said what my 5 year old daughter told her was directly from God.
