To me, this verse is simply expressing attitudes and practices that are commanded, taught, or advocated throughout the entire Bible. Although Christians are not saved through their works, they are to imitate Christ in their actions. Jesus was the very embodiment of good, and the complete opposite of sin or evil. With the help of the Holy Spirit, Christians are to strive to always reflect Christ's goodness in their own actions, words, and thoughts, holding on fast (that is, tightly) to such conduct, because the world, their flesh, and the devil are all trying to tear them away from it. They are also not just to avoid evil, but to actively shun and oppose it, to the point of abhorring (hating) it. They perform these actions in gratitude to God for the grace, love, and mercy that He has shown them in saving them through faith in Christ.
