Something fascinating to take note of is that William Tyndale, who translated the NT directly from Greek instead of the Latin Vulgate in the early 1500’s, translated this as “all quarters,” or in other words, everywhere. If his translation is correct, then Jesus is saying that earthquakes will be happening globally and simultaneously, which would be an unprecedented phenomenon, indeed. Given the descriptions of global destruction and chaos that we are presented with in Revelation, Tyndale’s translation seems at least quite plausible. That would certainly distinguish this sign of the end from the sporadic earthquakes that have been happening since he made this statement.

I would say that the apostles would have interpreted Jesus' words as applying to the known world at that time, but (in my opinion) Jesus (as God) could also have been referring of the entirety of the world as we know it today. The "various places" or "diverse locations" of which he was speaking could thus encompass places where we know food shortages or earthquakes continue to occur in modern times, but of which the apostles would not have been aware. This would have had the effect of potentially making the time of Jesus' return not as imminent as the apostles might have supposed. (The same might be said to apply to Jesus saying in Matthew 24:14 that the gospel would be preached throughout the whole world ("to all nations") prior to His return.)

This question has an easy answer and a complicated answer. First the easy answer. My KJV Bible has a footnote defining “divers” as various. I agree with one answer that these events will be unprecedented in nature, and “everywhere” may be a better transition. Here is my understanding of the complicated answer for this passage. Jesus was asked to give the physical signs of the end times. In verses 4 through 8 He is outlining the first three and a half years of the “Great Tribulation.” Jesus starts with Anti-christ, the first seal in Revelation. He then warns of wars and rumors of war. The second seal is nation again nation. Then the third seal of famine. Millions of people will starve to death. The forth seal of pestilence and disease. That will wipe out 1/4 of the earths population. The fifth seal the Anti-Christ tries to kill the Jews and Christians. Then the sixth seal of earthquakes that reshape the earth. I believe that Jesus was referring to the sixth seal in this passage. It will be unprecedented and will occur during the Tribulation. To read about the Tribulation seals see Revelation 6.

Matthew 24:7: For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in diverse places. Lord Jesus departed from the temple, and His disciples came to Him to show Him the buildings of the temple. Lord Jesus then said unto them, “There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down!” As he then sat on the Mount of Olives, disciples came unto him and said, “Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?” Lord Jesus then said, “For many shall come in my name to deceive many, and ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars, be not troubled.” (Mat 24:1-6) Today, in the diverse places that we see around us, which has begun, which is the beginning of the end times. The adversary, the devil as roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Pet 5:8) Apostle Paul has revealed that in the last days, perilous times shall come. The adversary Satan is leading mankind today to be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, and unholy. Who are then led to be the traitors, fierce despisers of those who are good, for they are reckless, high-minded lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. (2 Tim 3:1-4) Satan, the prince of the power of the air, brought violent storms (Eph 2:2) in the time of our Lord Jesus. When He entered a ship, there arose a great tempest in the sea, and the ship was covered with the waves. He rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. (Mat 8:23-27) Today, we see around the world, nations have risen against nations, kingdom against kingdom, with famines, pestilences, and earthquakes all over the world. The adversary has led mankind to gather nations in diverse palaces, as we see today. Amos was told by God the Father, “Surely the Lord God will do nothing,” but who has revealed His secret unto his servants, the prophets? An adversary, there shall be even round about the land, and he shall bring down thy strength from thee, and diverse palaces shall be plundered.” (Amos 3:7,11) In the diverse places that we see around today, which has begun, is the beginning of the end times, which shall then be the sign of His coming, in the clouds (Mat 24:30-31/1 Thes 4:16-17), and then, during the end times, He will stand on the mount. (Zec 14:4) Then shalt thou be visited by the Lord of hosts, with thunder, earthquakes, great noise with storms, and tempest, with a flame of devouring fire. As the people draw to Him, with their lips of their mouth that honor, but the heart is far from Him, taught by the precept of men, the wisdom of the wise shall perish, understanding of the prudent shall be hid. (Isa 29:6,13-14) For the Lord shall then shake all nations, and the desire of nations that shall come, He will fill this house with glory, having His two witnesses testifying Him, and having power. (Hag 2:6-7/Rev 11:3,6) The desires of the nations shall gather against Jerusalem to battle, the city shall be taken, houses rifled, women ravished, half the city shall go into captivity, then shall the Lord go forth and fight against the nations. His feet shall stand on that day on the mount of Olives (Zec 14:2-4). He shall inherit Judah, the holy land, and choose Jerusalem again, after sending the two anointed ones who witnessed the Lord Jesus, who stand by the Lord of the whole earth. (Zec 2:12,3:14) They shall prepare the way before Him, our Lord Jesus, who shall come and stand on the mount of Olives, and then come to His Temple. (Mala 3:1/Zec 14:4) Joel 2:32: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call.
