Why didn’t John recognize Jesus in Revelation 1:17?

Revelation 1:17

NKJV - 17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, " Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

I would say that John's description of the Being whom he saw as "someone like a son of man" (which was a term that had been applied to the Messiah since Old Testament times (as in Daniel 7:13), and also that John would have heard Jesus use about Himself many times), coupled with there being no indication in the text of John asking the Being who He was, are indications to me that he did know that he was seeing Jesus.

The fact that John does not identify Him more directly in the text (before Jesus identified Himself) is accounted for, in my view, by John's reaction to the glory of the vision, which, as John noted in the verse cited in the question, caused him to fall down as though dead.
