Just a few ways that occur to me offhand:

1. By allowing adverse events to come into our lives (as in the cases of Joseph (Genesis 37-40) and Job)

2. By directing us to perform actions that test both our faith and the priority we place on our relationship with God in comparison to our other priorities (as with Abraham and Isaac)(Genesis 22)

3. By delaying fulfillment of His promises (as with His promise to Abraham that he would have a son)(Genesis 15-21)

4. By allowing us to prosper (testing whether that prosperity will cause us to forget Him as its ultimate source)(Proverbs 30:9)

5. By allowing us to experience poverty (as a test of whether we lose faith in in Him because of it)(Proverbs 30:9)

6. By having us take an action that may result in considerable disruption in our lives, relying only on His word that it will work for our benefit (as with Abraham)(Genesis 12:1-3)

7. By requiring us to trust or obey Him when others try to persuade us not to (as with the case of the report of the spies who were sent to scout out the land of Canaan, with ten of the twelve spies saying that the land could not be conquered, and only Joshua and Caleb urging the people to rely on God)(Numbers 13-14)
