If the destruction being referred to in the question pertains to the events that occurred in AD 70, I would say that Jesus' teachings and prophecies about coming events contained in the gospels require a degree of discernment with respect to the differentiation of short-term and long-term occurrences -- specifically regarding the relatively imminent coming of the destruction of Jerusalem, in contrast to events or signs associated with Jesus' return at the close of the age.

To me, the clearest prophecy regarding the events that would occur in AD 70 is found in Luke 21:20-24. In my opinion, that interpretation is indicated most specifically by Jesus' reference in Luke 21:24 to Jerusalem being trampled on by the Gentiles until the time of the Gentiles would have been fulfilled.
