My opinion is that the reason singing is so important in church is that singing engages our whole being including our emotions. It is commanded, so God knows it's good for us. "Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart" (Ephesians 5:18-19). And God one day, according to Zephaniah 3:17, is going to sing over us. Let's face it, our God Is a singing God – I love this verse in Matthew 26:30, “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” Before Jesus was given up to be crucified, he sang with his disciples. Why is singing so important in church? I help lead our church's 2 services in worshipping God in Spanish, then in English because God says "praise Him with the stringed instruments" (Psalm 150:4). I play and sing with my 12-string guitar every Sunday morning.
