I would say that it was because He wanted to both increase their faith in God's ability to provide for their needs, and also give other individuals whom they would meet and evangelize in their travels the opportunity to serve God in the same way that they were doing by offering them necessities such as food and shelter. (As Jesus said in Luke 10:7, "The laborer is worthy of his wages.")
