Paul had said in 1 Corinthians 1:17-23 that the preaching that God was granting salvation to humanity through a Man who had endured the normally shameful death of crucifixion was a stumbling-block to Jews (who had expected the Messiah to be a conquering hero who would destroy Israel's enemies), and foolishness to Gentiles (who could not understand how such an action -- rather than displays of human wisdom through philosophy -- could possibly benefit others). However, to those who were being saved, it was an exhibition of both God's power and wisdom. That was the same sense in which Paul could then speak in 1 Corinthians 1:24-25 of Christ as having been made the wisdom of God for Christians.
