In Matthew 6:22 Jesus said “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” The context of this verse is Jesus teaching about money. You can’t serve God and money, Jesus said. So stop storing up treasures on earth and store up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:21-24).

When we choose to use our money and wealth to invest in the things that are important to God (sharing the gospel, caring for the poor, etc), then the Holy Spirit will give us razor sharp spiritual eyesight to invest our wealth in God pleasing activities that last forever and follow us to heaven.

In John 4:35 Jesus said “ 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”

When we ask Jesus to give us a heart for the lost, the Holy Spirit will show us the people who are ready to receive his salvation and sharing the gospel with them will be easy. In other cases, the Holy Spirit will show us the people who God has called, and our assignment will be to sow the seeds that will germinate a faith in God. Someone else will reap that harvest, but we will equally rejoice in it (John 4:34-38).

Christians can enhance the visual capacity of their spiritual eyes by engaging in spiritual practices (disciplines).

Spiritual practices engage our spirit in a way that brings us closer - or more in tune with - God. Just like when we go to the gym to strengthen our muscles, spiritual practices strengthen our spiritual muscles.

The list is long. Find the ones which work best for you and begin to practice them regularly.

Some ideas -

Prayer - spending extended time in prayer. Both speaking and actively listening to God.

Solitude - being alone with no distractions and then listen for the "still small voice of God" (1 Kings 19:11-12).

Fasting - a denial of the pleasure of food along with placing your well-being in God's hands (for a short period - 1 day) is a good exercise to become disciplined in. Jesus says "when" you fast...not "if" you fast (Matt. 6:16).

a Prayer Journal - actively listen for God and write down what ever you sense. Don't judge what you are writing at the time. Then go back and review a day or two later.

Bible Study - take a class that is a more directed bible study. Whenever we focus on God's words we can hear God speaking to us more clearly.

Bible reading - regular reading of scripture to increase your familiarity.

Spiritual Director - many practices are best served working one-on-one with a spiritual director (or spiritual coach). These individuals are trained to help you navigate some of the more difficult aspects of spiritual growth.

A good book on the subject is called:

Mansions of the Heart, by Thomas Ashbrook.

This may help you navigate along your journey.

Remember! Spiritual growth is a life-long journey. It is not always easy. Sometimes the steps forward seems small or even non-existant. Keep pressing. More than anything, God wants you to keep seeking and moving forward, even if you can't see the road ahead.
