Previous discussion of this issue on this site has indicated that God imposed such restrictions both to distinguish the Israelites' diet from that of the surrounding nations, and also for hygenic reasons (given the state of food preparation at that time) based on the health hazards to humans resulting from the creatures' diets, due to many types of shellfish being so-called "bottom-feeders".
