ESV - 1 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. 2 And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.

To me, the earthquake and the rocks splitting that occurred when Christ died were not significant of themselves, but were necessary accompaniments/causes or emphatic by-products of the splitting of the veil in the temple mentioned in the same verse, which represented Christ's atoning death removing the separation that existed between God and humanity caused by unforgiven sin.
