Under the Law given by God through Moses in the Old Testament, the penalty for sin (that is, transgression of the Law) was eternal separation from God. Since all humans were sinners, they were all condemned to that eternal separation from God after their temporal lives on earth. After Christ was incarnated; lived the sinless life of which no one else was capable; shed His own innocent blood as the full and sufficient payment for human sin; and then rose from the dead to prove the sufficiency of that payment in God's eyes, those who place their faith in that substitutionary, sacrificial payment (rather than in their imperfect attempts to keep God's Law through their own actions) are no longer condemned, and are set free from the requirement to keep God's Law perfectly in order to receive eternal life. Having been saved by faith, they can then obey God's commandments in gratitude to Him for the salvation that they have already received, rather than in a futile attempt to earn that salvation by their own works.
I think Romans 8:2 in one of the more modern translations answers this question: NIRV "Because of what Christ Jesus has done, you are free. You are now controlled by the law of the Holy Spirit who gives you life. The law of the Spirit frees you from the law of sin that brings death." In other words, because Christ died to pay the penalty for our sins and to free us from the domination of sin, we Christians are no longer facing condemnation. We have passed from death to life. We have crossed over. We now can experience freedom from the power that previously held sway over our lives, the power of sin. It’s a cruel master, but we now have a kind Master, Jesus Christ.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, physical death, but the GIFT of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. The GIFT of God is eternal life. Once we accept the GIFT, we can not lose it because it is eternal. Man can do nothing to pay his own sin debt. First John 1:8. If we say we have no sin we deceive our selves and the truth is not in us.. All men are sinners. Romans 3:9-10 There is none righteous, no not one. Believers have His imputed righteousness which is perfect righteousness. Romans 4:6. And our sin debt is paid in full. Romans 4:7-8. First John 2:2 For He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world. But, only those who have believed it are saved. John 3:16-18 John 5:24 John 6:40 and John 6:47. John 3:18 Believers are no longer condemned, but unbelievers are condemned already because they have not believed on the name of the Son of God. John 1:12 And Romans 1:16 Acts 16:31. We believe on Jesus and receive eternal life. John 6:47
