Although Christian marriage has a unique "one-flesh" aspect, many biblical principles that apply to more common interpersonal communication between Christians can also serve as useful guidance with regard to keeping channels of communication open between husbands and wives, as well. These would include:

1) treating your spouse as you would wish to be treated (Matthew 7:12);

2) keeping God's presence and mutual prayer at the heart of marriage (1 Thessalonians 5:17);

3) practicing mutual forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32);

4) taking time to listen and expressing anger without personal attacks (James 1:19-20);

5) not allowing resentments to silently fester (Ephesians 4:26-27); and

6) not expecting one partner to know the other's feelings, needs, or desires intuitively, but communicating them in a clear, unambiguous (but loving) manner (Ephesians 4:15)..
