God has given to us the answers to all questions in His Word, The Bible. 40+ years ago, when undergoing some marital challenges and wanting encouragement to get through them, I found what we now call, "The Love Chapter," where Paul outlines what love is. You've probably heard it read at weddings, seen it printed on wedding cards, etc. In 1 Corinthians, 13th chapter, we find the essence of what love is. At v. 4-8a: "Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love is not puffed up with pride; does not behave rudely; does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things; Love never fails." I recommend meditating on these verses. The Holy Spirit will give you insight and understanding, as He did for me. (I meditated on each of those descriptions Paul points out. I am married over 50 years, and I have this passage etched in my mind, for it it has helped me in so many instances.) Another is Galatians 5:22-25 where Paul tells us what the Fruits of the Spirit are (God's attributes). If we are to die to self and live in the Spirit, we do well to develop these attributes. All of it adds up to "love" in its best form...to be like God in the sense that we are not carnal but spiritual, obedient to Him by being patient, meek, and so on. Having a heart to love and being humble, putting the needs of the other above our own, brings peace and a happy marriage.
