Paul discusses this in the same chapter containing the verse cited in the question (Galatians 5).

He writes about what he calls "the acts of the flesh", in which he includes sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry (which would include assigning anything in one's life a greater priority than loving and serving God), witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, and orgies.

He then gives examples of the fruits of the Spirit, which include love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Actively avoiding the former group, and equally actively pursuing or practicing the latter group (especially on occasions where a choice is presented between the two groups) characterizes a life led by the Holy Spirit.

Also, since all of Scripture has been inspired by the Holy Spirit, Christians can (and should) obtain guidance from it regarding the manner of living that it commands or teaches.

And they should also seek the Spirit's guidance through prayer, paying attention to how events may occur or be ordered in response.
