Jesus was both truly God and also truly human. It was his human nature that was capable of experiencing death, and that, in fact, did experience death (although not as a consequence of sin, but of Jesus voluntarily giving up His human life (John 10:18)). His divine nature continued living (as indicated, for example, by Jesus telling the thief on the cross that he would be with Him that day in Paradise (Luke 23:43)), until it was re-united with His glorified physical body when He was resurrected.
An interesting inquiry, indeed. No, God did not die on the cross. If He did, the world would cease to exist instantaneously. In fact, the whole universe would cease to exist. God sustains the universe (Acts 17--As Paul said, "In Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). But If God dies, everything dies with Him. --R,C. Sproul
