By my understanding, Egypt was regarded as having been populated by the descendants of Noah's son Ham following the Flood. The antagonism between Israel and the descendants of Ham and of Ham's son Canaan (which included both the people of Egypt and the inhabitants of the "Promised Land") was viewed as the result of the curse that Noah placed on them as a result of Ham having seen Noah lying naked and unconscious after Noah had gotten drunk on wine following the Flood (Genesis 9:20-27). Noah's sons Shem and Japheth avoided this curse when they covered up the unconscious Noah by backing into his tent and averting their eyes so that they would not see their father naked.
