How are we "put right with God"?

But now God's way of putting people right with himself has been revealed. It has nothing to do with law, even though the Law of Moses and the prophets gave their witness to it. (Romans 3:21).

I would express it by saying that we (as universally sinful humans) are not "put right" with a holy God through anything we do (or even CAN do) (such as obedience to a code of laws or commandments), but instead by faith in the forgiveness of sins that Jesus alone made possible for us by His sinless life, atoning death, and resurrection. And even that faith itself (that is, our ability to believe) does not come from us, but is a gift of grace (undeserved mercy) from God Himself, as stated by Paul in Ephesians 2:8-9.

After that reconciliation with God through faith has taken place, we can then begin to perform good works that have merit in God's eyes, and that serve as the basis for our degree of reward from God in eternity. However, those works do not produce our initial salvation, but are the evidence of having already been saved through faith.
