Unbelief! Genesis 15:6: Abraham believed God and it was accounted to Him for righteousness. Proverbs 14:16: "A wise man fears and departs from evil, but a fool is self confident." When people forsake God, they look for other ways to satisfy their natural desires. The people in Jeremiah had deserted God and looked to other gods. The problem is there is only One True God, and He is the living spring. He is Jesus Christ! Hebrews 3:12 warns lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the Living God. Cisterns are difficult work, and they often don't perform properly. Jeremiah 17:4: "And you, even yourself shall let go of your heritage, which I gave you; and I will cause you to serve your enemies in the land which you do not know; for you have kindled a fire in My anger, which shall burn forever." Jeremiah 17:13: "O Lord the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be ashamed...there is only one hope, the Lord the fountain of living water!...any who depart shall be written in the earth." Jesus said to believers in Luke 10:20, “Rejoice because your names are written in heaven!” Matthew 11:28: "Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Why would anyone choose to work for things that will break down, when there is living water, Jesus who wants to save you? I am sure it has to be pride, self-righteousness and unbelief! No faith!
