In my opinion, the psalmist is not speaking of his own spiritual state, or moral failings on his part, as leading or having led him astray, but is referring to his position with respect to the outward circumstances in which he is living (as a wanderer in the wilderness of the world), and is asking God (based on the psalmist's remembrance of God's commands) not to abandon him in that position.
How can we stray if we remember God’s commandments? Ps. 119:176 says,“I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.” The writer was humble and transparently honest. He is possibly the same author as the author of Psalm 131, where that writer said, “LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.” –Ps 131:1. He confesses that his behavior does not always match his belief. He is “prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,” too, unfortunately, all too often. But the straying sheep does not want to stay lost. It loves its Shepherd. The sheep remembers God’s good commands.
