What pleases the Lord (Ephesians 5:10)?

If God says, "Find out what pleases the Lord," --Ephesians 5:10 -- then what would be some things that DO please the Lord?

Ephesians 5:1 - 33

ESV - 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Hebrews 11:6 states: "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

So the very first thing you must have to please the Lord is faith; faith that He exists, was, and is according to His Word. Beyond that, anything you do that is not condemned in scripture can be something you can do to please the Lord, if done in faith to glorify God. This can be a "great work" like giving to the poor, sharing the gospel, or feeding the hungry, or may be the things you do every day like going to work, living your life morally, or even the simple act of taking out the trash on trash pickup day while praising His name.

To please the Lord, you must not call God a liar or a fool in anything God has declared. This is the life long work of your sanctification in learning to mold your life to HIs Word, instead of His Word around your life. God does not change, he does not learn, He does not "progress". What He declared, even in the beginning, is His view even today. New believers may be tempted to believe that many things stated in God's Word are now "outdated", or "surely things have changed." For our eternal God, who exists beyond time and space as things He has made, who sees the end from the beginning, nothing has changed. Each time you surrender your former ways of thinking to the truth of His Word, you will indeed please the Lord, as you can only do so in great faith.

Remember that our enemy, the devil, is a liar and a murderer from the beginning. Our culture today is literally saturated with the lies of the devil, and as Christians we must constantly search our own hearts and be on guard to reject the lies of the world. The devil lies to deceive us. There is no sin conceived by man that did not have somewhere in it's genesis believing a lie to be the truth. With lies, the devil leads people into sin, to love their sin, and in so loving sin come to the point of declaring, "Surely there is no god", to the death of their souls. The devil murders with lies.

But if you cling fast to God's Truth, His Word, and persevere throughout your life, doing the good works God has laid before your life, you will indeed please the Lord as He says, "Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share in your master's happiness!" Mat 25:23

I think the thing that pleases God the most is our faith. He loves it when we completely trust Him!

The other thing that would make Him smile is if we do what Jesus said... that is, love one another as He loved us.

A very simple request, but sometimes very difficult to do!

Goodness, righteousness, and truth please the Lord. That is what Paul says in Ephesians 5:9. So it is in the context of Ephesians 5:10. Paul is assuming his readers will work at these virtues; he's just reminding them to do it.

Also, Paul says to the church at Rome in Romans 12:1, "Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship." Be living sacrifices! But I heard someone say, "The trouble with a living sacrifice is that it is always crawling off the altar!"
