ESV - 9 But the wise answered, saying, 'Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.

In my opinion, the buying of the oil represents living a life that is consistent with, or bears a visible witness to, one's professed faith. By the time the bridegroom comes, there is no longer an opportunity for such a witness -- that is, to "let your light shine before men" (Matthew 5:16) -- and no one indivdual's witness can suffice, supplement, or substitute for another (that is, no one can "sell" their own "oil" to another). It is in the absence of such a witness that the bridegroom tells the foolish virgins that he does not know them.
